Mastering Strategies for all 3 parts of IELTS Speaking – Extended Guide with Scenarios

This guide complements your “All About Speaking” IELTS book’s three parts. It’s designed to help you practice speaking naturally, handle different question types, and boost your confidence.
Principle: Speak like a real person. Use strategies like S.P.E.A.K. and P.R.E.P., for structuring your answer and 2S, S.T.A.R., and O.R.E.O. successively for Part 1, Part 2 and Part 3 question types.
PART 1 – Short Answers (Familiar Topics)
Goal: Give short, natural answers with a small personal story.
Strategy: 2S Method (Short Sentence + Small Story)
| Step | How to Apply | Example |
| Short Sentence | Answer directly | “I love painting.” |
| Small Story | Add reason, detail, or example | “Since I was 12, I paint landscapes almost every weekend.” |
| Full Answer | Combine both | “I love painting. Since I was 12, I paint landscapes almost every weekend.” |
S.P.E.A.K. Reminder: Speak clearly, expand your ideas, avoid long pauses, and keep it natural.
Common Part 1 Question Types & How to Answer
| Question Type | How to Include in Answer | Example |
| Yes/No | Answer + Reason + Example | Q: Do you enjoy reading? A: “Yes, I do. I love reading fantasy novels because they let me escape into different worlds. Last week I finished a book about dragons, and it was amazing.” |
| Preference | Choose one + Compare | Q: Do you prefer summer or winter? A: “I prefer summer because I enjoy outdoor activities. Winter is cozy, but I don’t like the cold.” |
| Frequency | Include words like often, sometimes | Q: How often do you exercise? A: “I usually exercise three times a week, mostly in the mornings because it energizes me for the day.” |
| Past vs Present | Show change clearly | Q: Did you read as a child? A: “Yes, I did. I used to read bedtime stories every night, but now I prefer reading online articles.” |
| Opinion | Add personal reasoning | Q: Is cooking important? A: “Yes, I think cooking is essential because it’s healthier than eating out and it’s relaxing for me after work.” |
Note: In Part 1, don’t overcomplicate. Short, natural, slightly personal answers are better than long, memorized ones.
Part 1 Practice Scenarios – Increasing Difficulty

- Slightly Harder: Do you like to travel? Explain your answer with a personal example.

Tip: Use phrases like I usually…, For me personally…, Also… to sound natural.
PART 2 – Individual Long Turn (Cue Card)
Goal: Speak 1.5–2 minutes naturally using the S.T.A.R. Story Strategy.
| Step | How to Apply | Example |

PART 3 – Two-Way Discussion

| Cause / Effect | Explain cause + outcome + reflection | Q: Why do people like online shopping? A: “Online shopping is convenient and saves time, so more people are buying online. I often do this for groceries and it’s very practical.” |
